Nobody's Perfect

A comedy by Simon Williams

Directed by Ewan Crockett

Following the success of the Australian Premiere of Anonymous Theatre in 2005 at Beaumaris Theatre, “closed” auditions were held and actors cast this “four handed” play. The only people who knew the identity of cast members were the production team ... the actors didn’t know each other until the night of the play! Ewan and his team rehearsed with each individual cast member separately, coming and going in cloak an dagger style and the first time their identities were revealed was as the curtain went up on the big night (they could not even tell their friends and family!).

“Nobody’s Perfect” is a delightful play, (which Ewan directed for Brighton Theatre in 2001). It tells the story of shy, staid statistician Leonard who works from home, suffering jibes from his teenage daughter and rascally father. He is anxious to break into print and sends many submissions to Love Is All Around, a feminist publisher. Editor Harriet rejects his masculine efforts until he submits a novel, based on his experiences as a single parent under the pseudonym Myrtle Banbury. Harriet takes notice and offers a deal and Leonard must carry on the pretence, creating Myrtle as an enigmatic aunt, who eventually must appear and Leonard has no choice but to assume her identity. In doing so he falls in love with Harriet and finds he has more courage as the flamboyant Myrtle than as the stammering Leonard.

A lovely supper followed the show, giving the audience the opportunity to meet the cast and crew and share in their experiences.
