ABOUT BEAUMARIS THEATRE
THE WITCHES
The Witches is not a fairy tale. This is a play about real witches. Real witches don't ride around on broomsticks. They don't even wear black cloaks and hats. They are vile, cunning, detestable creatures who disguise themselves as nice, ordinary ladies. So how can you tell when you're face to face with one?
This is a faithful adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story in which Boy and his Grandmother defeat the Grand High Witch and her followers, who are holding a Conference in an English seaside hotel.
Returning to direct my fifth production with Beaumaris Theatre is both a joy and a privilege. This time, I’ve taken a leap from the world of musicals into the realm of straight plays, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring The Witches to life.
Roald Dahl’s The Witches is a masterclass in storytelling that dares to be bold, dark, and wildly imaginative. Dahl wrote this tale to empower children by showing them that courage, cleverness, and love can triumph over even the most sinister forces. Beneath the thrilling surface of witches lies a deeper message about resilience.
Staging The Witches is not just a celebration of Dahl’s storytelling, it’s a chance to spark imagination, laughter, and a little bit of mischief in audiences of all ages. In this tale, witches masquerade as ordinary women, an idea that both thrills and unsettles audiences, encouraging them to question what they see and to trust their instincts!
This show has been a true team effort. I’m incredibly grateful to Chris and Sally for their tireless work on set and props, to Jenni for her magical touch with costumes, to the dynamic duo of Deb and Deb for keeping everything running smoothly as Production Manager and Stage Manager and to Amelie, whose puppeteering skills have added a wonderful layer of magic to our storytelling. A special shoutout to Bronte, whose willingness to step up and assist has been an absolute godsend. Plus, all other volunteers for their contributions to this wonderful community.
I’m proud that this production has given many of our cast members the opportunity to perform in their very first show. Watching them grow in confidence and creativity has been a highlight of this journey.
Thank you for supporting local theatre. We hope this show sparks joy, laughter, and just a little bit of goosebumps, for children and grown-ups alike.

Leah Osburn - Director
Leah Osburn is a seasoned theatre enthusiast with a rich history of directing, choreographing, and performing across numerous community theatre companies in Melbourne. She currently serves as Treasurer for the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria and has held leadership roles with MLOC Productions, including President from 2020 to 2021.
With over a decade of experience in her full-time career outside of the arts at Australia Post, Leah continues to make a vibrant impact in local theatre through her creative leadership and love of storytelling. A proud mum of two, Leah brings warmth, vision, and a collaborative spirit to every show.
Leah most recently directed Daddy Long Legs with People's Playhouse, a beautifully intimate production that was met with acclaim for its emotional depth and elegant staging. Prior to that, she directed A Year with Frog and Toad at Beaumaris Theatre, delighting audiences with its charm and whimsy.
She is thrilled to be directing The Witches, a production that celebrates the magic, mischief, and imagination that make live theatre so special.
She extends heartfelt thanks to her family for their unwavering support and to the Beaumaris Theatre committee for their trust and enthusiasm.
Emma Blake - Grand High Witch
Emma is delighted to return to the Beaumaris Theatre stage, having previously appeared as a myriad of woodland creatures in the whimsical A Year with Frog and Toad. You might also remember her as the Botox-obsessed blonde beautician from Beaumaris Theatre’s inaugural Monologue Festival staged in June 2024.
Beyond Beaumaris Theatre, Emma recently took part in Windmill Theatre Company’s Mamma Mia!, contributing both as a pit singer and understudying the role of Rosie.
Other theatre credits include Seussical (Windmill Theatre Company), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Cactus Musicals), Guys and Dolls (Nova Music Theatre), Into the Woods (Aspect Inc.), The Wizard of Oz (Players Theatre Company), and Thoroughly Modern Millie (MLOC).
In 2023, Emma wrote and performed her original cabaret Basic Witch as part of PEP Productions’s Kaleidoscope of Character series. This act was an exploration of famous witches in pop culture - so it’s a full circle moment for Emma to now don the heels (and claws!) of the iconic Grand High Witch.
She hopes you enjoy the show, and promises that no children were harmed in the making of this performance!
Alexander Coughlan - Boy
Alexander is excited to be making his theatre debut as Boy in The Witches.
He has been attending drama classes with D.K Productions for the past 18 months and is enjoying the opportunity to develop his acting skills. He is honoured to be the Performing Arts Captain at his primary school in 2025.
Outside of drama, he plays basketball and football and loves watching movies, as well as cheering on his favourite teams, the Melbourne Demons and the Melbourne Storm.
He would like to thank the entire cast and crew for their support and encouragement throughout this incredible experience. He is very excited for his family and friends to see the production.
Denise McDonough - Grandmother
Denise got her first taste of theatre decades ago, as a chorus member in high school musicals. While at university, Denise co-wrote and performed in a musical adaptation of Norman Hunter’s children’s book, “The Home-made Dragon”. She played the part of the dragon, a comic role that thrilled the young audiences.
When she moved to Mildura after studying teaching, she once again joined the chorus of musicals in local amateur theatre companies. For the last few decades, she has only performed informally; in items for small community concerts, children’s party entertainment, forcing her workmates to perform the company’s mission statement as interpretive dance when she chaired the team meeting, etc.
Now that her children have grown, she looks forward to performing in formal theatre productions again. She decided to join the Beaumaris Theatre community after finding a newspaper clipping of her mother-in-law in a show with the Theatre in the 1960s.
You may have been served a drink by Denise at the candy bar, but now we welcome her to the Beaumaris Theatre stage for her ‘proper acting’ debut.
Jack Van Vuuren - Bruno
Jack is thrilled to be making his debut with Beaumaris Theatre in The Witches, marking his first performance beyond the school stage. Now in Year 7, Jack played Grandpa Joe in his Year 6 musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, earning the school’s Performing Arts Award.
He has been training with Debbie Keyt at D.K Productions since October 2024 and recently performed in an adaptation of Ladies in Black for their end-of-term showcase.
Offstage, Jack enjoys playing trombone and piano, mountain biking, karting, tennis and hockey. He’s also a big fan of Roald Dahl!
John Morgan - Mr Jenkins
John is excited to join Beaumaris Theatre in The Witches. He previously performed with Brighton Theatre Company in Torch Song, and in school productions including Perils of Prudence Goodheart, War of the Worlds, The Wedding Singer, Across the Barricades, and The Drowsy Chaperone.
He holds a Bachelor of Design (Animation & Interactive Media) from RMIT and works as an animator, writer, and voice actor.
John is passionate about storytelling and thrilled to return to the stage with such a fantastic cast and crew.
Róisin O’Neill - Mrs Jenkins
Róisin has been immersed in the performing arts for the last 26 years, with junior drama and working her way up through the Children’s Performing Company of Australia in musical theatre studies, which led to her performing in 2011 at The Palms at Crown as a singer for One Night with Elvis.
She moved to productions such as The Producers and Spamalot (MLOC Productions), Rock of Ages (Williamstown Musical Theatre Company), Into the Woods and Beauty and the Beast (Aspect Inc.).
Recently, she has turned her attention to the classics and some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays, having worked with the Australian Shakespeare Company’s Graduate Players’ Program, with their 2016 course of Much Ado: The Musical, touring all the way to Prague.
Róisin first joined Beaumaris Theatre in their production of A Year with Frog and Toad in 2024 as Player One, and returned for Ladies in Black earlier this year as Mrs Miles. She’s ready to take on yet another mother role and help bring this classic tale to life.
Amanda Lee Gregory - Ensemble
Mandy is new to Beaumaris Theatre and is making her on-stage debut. She has always enjoyed live theatre; however, a career in health has been her main focus, but she has enjoyed public speaking in her leadership roles, speaking at conferences and at fundraising events for the past 30 years.
Mandy’s hobbies and passions include participating and being part of a team, fostering children, especially teenagers, walking her dogs and most recently, travelling around Australia with her husband Joe.
Mandy is very excited to be part of The Witches.
Angela Andrews - Ensemble
Angela makes her theatrical debut with Beaumaris Theatre in The Witches.
Back in the '90s, she lit up the school stage with teenage enthusiasm and a flair for the dramatic. Fast forward to today, and after enrolling in D.K Productions’ adult drama classes just a year ago, Angela has rekindled her love of performance.
Angela is delighted to be back on stage in this wickedly fun and fabulous production.
Anne-Maree Pollard - Ensemble

Ben is making his theatrical debut with Beaumaris Theatre, but on a stage he already knows from 18 months of classes with D.K Productions.
Ben is excited about how he will grow in his first theatrical troupe, and the lessons he will learn.
Ben is Arts Captain of his primary school and has appeared in a number of school plays including Foreigners in Oztrailia where he played a lead role as Fredrick.
Ben is delighted to play a part in bringing The Witches to the Beaumaris Theatre audience.
Claire Ruberu - Ensemble
Many moons ago a spell was cast and Claire was first lured to the world of theatre appearing in many school productions. There was no escape and she conjured up roles in Shakespeare, Wilde and Orwell, yet thrived in the wild, unpredictable magic of Theatresports, where no scene was ever quite what it seemed. Claire continued with community theatre... performance was a potion too hard to resist!
Emerging from her cave after a 30 year curse, Claire returned to the stage in Beaumaris Theatre’s 70th Anniversary Christmas Panto-Revue. She had audiences in a trance at Beaumaris Theatre’s Monologue Festival, and keeps her talons sharp with D.K Productions Adult Masterclass. Now, she joins the coven as part of The Witches ensemble, stirring the cauldron with a hiss, hex and a cackle.
Emily Daniels - Ensemble
Emily is delighted to be making her debut with Beaumaris Theatre.
Her recent acting credits include A Matter of Life and Death, The Trial, Our Town and Romeo & Juliet (Hart Theatre Company).
She also recently worked backstage on Hydra (Brighton Theatre Company).
Emily is thrilled for the chance to be part of this wonderful production and is incredibly grateful to the team for making it possible.
Georgia Clare - Ensemble
Georgia hasn’t always been a fan of all things spooky; as a child she was the first to look away during The Grand High Witch’s reveal on TV and refused to watch the rest of The Witches film. She’s sure you’ll be far braver than she was and enjoy the show! She promises it's all in good fun.
Other than her love of all things kooky and spooky she has completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama) course at Deakin University. She is in Bustco’s current production of Pride & Prejudice as Lady Lucas. Her previous roles include Myrtle Wilson in The Great Gatsby (The 1812 Theatre), various roles in her co-written play Gary the Ghost, Ruth in Cosi (Bustco) and an Ensemble Robot in Rossum’s Universal Robots (Bustco).

She is so grateful to have this chance to be a part of Beaumaris Theatre and this production The Witches.

Beaumaris Theatre was founded by Bill and Angela Martin in 1953. Bill and Angela were thespians who built a theatre in the attic of their home. It housed about twenty audience members and had a small stage and dressing room.
Soon the demand for tickets for these productions far exceeded the space available, so the Martins along with other members of the Beaumaris Players, worked very hard to have the theatre space we now know in Wells Road.
For the last 70 years, thespians from all walks of life and various backgrounds have been treading the prestigious boards laid by Bill and Angela. We are delighted to continue their legacy of producing theatre for the Bayside community and beyond.
