Steel Magnolias

by Debbie Keyt

I first saw the movie Steel Magnolias in 1989 and I was uplifted and torn apart by the beautiful, heartwarming story, witty and moving script and the special relationships of the friends played exceptionally by Hollywood’s powerhouse of female stars. There was no doubt their friendships transcended off-screen to real life.

I was overjoyed to discover the screenplay was based on a play written lovingly by Robert Harling who is the real-life brother of the character of Shelby.

It was a privilege to have the opportunity to direct it at Beaumaris Theatre in 2006 with our very own outstanding cast, whose relationships off stage were as precious as those of their characters. Our production starred Lesley Wardrop as Truvy, Stacey Stewart as Annelle, Cheryl Threadgold as Clairee, Trudi Sheppard as Shelby, Debra Drape as M’Lynn and Barb Stewart as Ouiser.

Last year, passionate young director, James McAllister pitched Steel Magnolias to us and admittedly I felt rather protective of the show I had such a treasured relationship with. I had no reason to be concerned as his presentation was so heartfelt and he had a deep understanding and love of the characters and their stories. I offered to be the producer for the show, just to be involved and help in any way I could.

In November, James was offered a job in theatre in the UK and the Committee were keen for Steel Magnolias to be part of our 2024 season. I am delighted and honoured to have the exciting opportunity to direct it again.

We were overwhelmed with our auditions and the calibre of our auditionees was quite extraordinary. We have assembled a phenomenal cast and I am so excited to begin rehearsals. I know the journey ahead will be more splendid than words can describe and developing the friendships and relationships on stage and off will be pure bliss.

To quote Truvy, ‘laughter through tears is my favourite emotion’ and no doubt we’ll have an abundance of laughter and tears in store.

Directed by Debbie Keyt, Steel Magnolias will run from 10 - 25 May 2024 at Beaumaris Theatre.
