In the Spotlight with Ben Zagami

In November’s production of Blackadder II, Ben Zagami is making his Beaumaris Theatre debut as Lord Edmund Blackadder. We asked Ben to step under the spotlight to get to know him better.

What was your first role in the theatre? (on stage or off)?

The first proper play I was ever in was the school play back in 2001. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the play, but I remember putting everything I had in the two lines of dialogue I had, and loving being part of a team, all working together to put on a great show.
Who in the show is most like their character?
That's a pretty fraught question in a show that features some pretty unflattering characters, but I've already been struck by John's buoyant personality and sense of fun. It's a trait I think he shares with Lord Percy Percy.

Without giving anything away, what’s your favourite line of dialogue from the show?

"Ah Nathaniel, this reminds me of our wedding night..."
What was your most memorable theatrical experience?

I directed my first play last year, and I think it gave me a whole new appreciation for the great many cogs that have to be furiously whirring behind the scenes to make a show work. But that moment when the lights came up on opening night and I got to see all the work put in by everyone involved finally coming to fruition was the highlight of the experience for sure.
What place brings you the most joy?

Any table with a board game on it, surrounded by my best friends. So many memories!
What is your favourite midnight snack?

ANZAC biscuits, when they're soft and chewy.
What is your dream show to work on?

If I could sing, I'd love to try my hand at King George in Hamilton.
When you are not at the theatre, where can you be found?

At home with my two daughters. If by some miracle they're both asleep at the same time, I'll be upstairs in my nerd cave, painting miniatures and listening to music.
